BIPOLAR FAITH – Violence and Suffering
Creating a spiritual community of hope around people struggling with mental health is obviously important to loving people of faith. Coleman’s train-the-trainer seminar is a wonderful resource for leaders who who are helping churches, caregiver groups, and civic non-profit organizations establish and strengthen a group of people within in their own organizations caring for the families, friends, and loved ones of the community around those working through and thriving with mental illness.
In this train-the-trainer framework, join Monica A. Coleman, MDiv, Ph.D. as she coaches you through her book, Bipolar Faith: A Black Woman’s Journey with Depression and Faith and workshop materials, equipping you to lead others through the material. You will receive a free digital copy of her book as well as the companion materials.
In five online coaching sessions held five consecutive Tuesdays at 4:00pm PST, discuss some of the most challenging issues of our times, issues that are often kept silent by society- mental health, sexual and domestic violence, and religious diversity. Through Monica’s story, reflect on your own story and your interactions with persons struggling through trauma, depression, and mental illness. COURSE FACILITATORS
MONICA A. COLEMAN, MDiv., PhD.
Monica A. Coleman, MDiv, PhD, teaches theology and African-American religions at Claremont School of Theology (CST), in Southern California. She is a theologian who works at the intersection of philosophy, faith and African American culture. She is the author or editor of six books and numerous articles covering the topics of sexual and domestic violence, mental health and religious pluralism.
Dr. Coleman is an ordained minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church and a sought-after speaker and preacher. In 2005, The African American Pulpit named Coleman one of the “Top 20 to Watch—The New Generation of Leading Clergy: Preachers under 40.” Dr. Coleman has been featured as an expert in religion and mental health on NPR, Beliefnet.com, PsychCentral.com, and Huffington Post Live. She blogs on faith and depression at www.beautfulmindblog.com.
FORMAT AND SCHEDULE
This interactive weekly online seminar occurs on Tuesdays from 4:00-5:30pm PST and is structured using elements from the companion study guide to Bipolar Faith as the starting point to think, converse, and ally with people suffering from depression and bipolar faith.
