Peacekeeping in the City: Congregations Responding to Gun Violence
Spend a week with renowned scholar, Rev. Dr. David D. Daniels III
June 19-23, 2017: 9:00 am to 4:30 pm each day
Gun violence touches every community, creating a lasting and terrifying effect of fear, mistrust, and further violence, tearing families and communities apart. As people of faith, we can’t sit by and watch it get worse. How do communities of faith engage the issue to be part of the solution?
Join McCormick Theological Seminary professor Dr. David D. Daniels, III for a weeklong intensive seminar designed for faith leaders and community activists to address the various ways that communities of faith can address urban violence. Dr. Daniels has researched and lectured on the work of local churches working to respond to gun violence in the Metropolitan Chicago area. He is a Bishop in the Church of God in Christ.
Participants in this course will:
- Draw from the research of sociologists, criminologists, psychologists, historians, and theologians.
- Examine an array of immediate, mid-range, and long-range strategies.
- Focus on engaging the issue on various levels: individual, family, network, neighborhood, municipal, state, and federal.
Originally designed for Doctor of Ministry students, San Francisco Theological Seminary and the Center for Innovation in Ministry at SFTS have opened up this important event to all who are interested: students, faith leaders, and community leaders and activists.
Prior to the seminar, participants are strongly encouraged to read Reclaiming the Gospel of Peace: Challenging the Epidemic of Gun Violence (2015) edited by Sharon Ely Pearson.
