We spent our morning at the Sea of Galilee. It was exciting to see my colleagues put their feet in the water. As we entered we walked through the park and churches surrounding this sacred spot. As I stood there and pondered for a moment Jesus in the boat and his saying to Peter to come to me. What did Jesus mean by this? What does it mean to get out of the boat and come to Jesus? I believe this call is Jesus’ invitation to us to join in his ministry. Jesus is calling us to follow his example to reach out to the people, to feed them, to walk with them and to stand against the forces of oppression as Jesus did. To follow Jesus we have to get out of our boats of safety and security. It may mean put your job or even life on the line. Peter stepped out, he sank, but Jesus rescued him. We to may slip but Jesus will also save us, for he was sent here to save us, not just for a boarding pass to heaven but a call to be in the ministry of God’s justice movement. Are you willing to get out of the boat and step on the water? Will you walk with me? I am out of the boat!
