Have you or others like you ever been forced to leave the community you lived in? Have you ever been denied a chance to participate in what happens in your community? Have you been told to move because the land could be put to better use, without you there?
As a relatively young Black leader in Baltimore, I refuse to be a meal ticket for white people who are not genuinely invested in the Black community. There are too many Black children’s lives at stake to play polite parlor games for grant money, prestige and status with white liberals.
With plenty of evidence to refute the need to spend millions to build a jail for juveniles, it would not be far-fetched to expect Gov. Martin O'Malley to instead focus his attention — and our state's precious resources — on projects that prevent youth from engaging in crime.
