Ms. Turral started an organization called Hand in Hand Baltimore, which helps to connect charged juveniles with caring mentors (most of whom are graduate psychology based students) who are willing to help provide them with counseling, individual and group therapy, mentoring, academic enrichment, and case management.
As Christians, we are often scared of emotions like rage and anger. When we experience these emotions, we believe that they are unholy or unrighteous or not Christ-like. And so we suffocate on our natural emotions, afraid that we sin by expressing them.
Let us not get consumed with getting Zimmerman arrested. Zimmerman is just one of many. Let’s not get consumed with seeing that Trayvon “get’s justice.” He, too, is one of a slue of others who have not and will not in the present system. Instead, let’s use our energy to organize ourselves and empower ourselves so that we are not dependent on any other entity to protect us, defend us, or give us justice.
On Sunday, February 26, 2012, Trayvon Martin, an unarmed 17-year-old, was shot and killed by George Zimmerman in Sanford, Florida. Zimmerman, a 28-year-old man, argues that he was acting in self-defense. Incredibly, Mr. Zimmerman has not yet been arrested.
This year's conference attracted hundreds of the nation's leading scholars and clergy who convened to learn, organize, strategize and partner with Michelle Alexander, author of "The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness" and SDPC as they launched the To Be Free at Last Movement.
My disappointment is with Black people of influence who have decided to use the credibility granted them by Black people to serve the political agenda of other communities.
